SKINCARE 101
Skin is more than just the first thing people see – it’s a reflection of your overall health, as well as the body’s defense against germs and the environment. Help your child maximize the health of
their skin.
Treating skin right should be part of everyone’s daily routine. Keeping skin healthy can give your child the confidence to face the world. Encourage your child to follow the golden rules of skincare:
- Wash – Have your child use a gentle cleanser twice daily. Washing too frequently or with a harsh cleanser can over-dry or irritate skin, making their acne worse.
- Dry – Your child should gently pat skin dry with a soft cloth. Don’t scrub skin dry or your child could add irritation.
- Moisturize – Your child needs to use a non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores) moisturizer while skin is still a little damp.
- Protect – Have your child use a sunscreen every day, year-round, to combat the damaging effects of the sun. Many non-comedogenic moisturizers include sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection.
- Hands Off – Inform your child to never squeeze or pick at pimples, since that will only contribute to infection, inflammation and scarring.
Pick Products Wisely
Your child should only use makeup, moisturizers and sunscreens labeled “non-comedogenic.” They are specially formulated not to irritate skin or clog pores. We recommend Cetaphil
® Gentle Skin Cleanser which is gentle enough for children, teens and adults.
Diet
Your child won’t get acne from eating chocolate and French fries (a common myth), but a balanced diet is beneficial for your child’s overall health.
Stress
Stress doesn’t directly cause acne, but it can cause fluctuations in hormones that can lead to acne. Make sure your child gets enough sleep and encourage exercise to reduce stress.
Know Yourself
Everyone’s skin is different. Encourage your child to assess their skin so you can help them treat it correctly. Learn more with our
